Common Causes of Headaches

Headaches are present in all cultures, sexes and races being probably the most frequent complaint. But it seems to be America that is especially plagued with headaches. While there are many factors that can cause headaches, and some causes of headache are not completely understood, it is the diet most Americans follow that is responsible for such amount of headache complaints. It is a known fact that a typical American diet is primarily consisting of nitrates and fast food. That explains many headaches cases. If you are suffering from headaches, it is important to determine what is causing them, so that you can take appropriate precautions to avoid headaches in the future. Of course, each person is different and each case is individual, but knowing the most common causes of headaches will help you at least identify a pattern so that you can consult with your physician or handle with the problem by your own.

Diet and Nutrition

Diet and nutrition play a major role in causing headaches as well as getting rid of them. People tend to overlook this possibility as a cause of headaches, but indeed it can be the most important. Many people wrongly assume that an allergy comes in the form of rashes and hives, but actually headaches, exhaustion and other less obvious symptoms are also warning signs. If you notice that consumption of certain foods gives you headache, try cutting them out of your diet. It may take a few weeks before you notice any changes, but if your diet is the cause of your headaches, you will most certainly notice a difference.

Stress

Stress is another cause of headaches that few people recognize. Stress is a particular reason for tension headaches that appear mostly in the neck and forehead areas. It is sometimes described as a burning sensation in the neck, temples and forehead. Of course, it is impossible to avoid stress in your life completely, but you can at least prevent your body from becoming overly stressed. Exercises such as yoga, tai chi and even high impact aerobics can help to relax a person on a daily basis. If exercises do not seem to be really helpful, you can alternatively practice deeper relaxation techniques such as meditation and aromatherapy to relieve your headache. Sometimes just a deep breath and a short break from the hustle and bustle of life are enough to relax and feel better.

Spinal Misalignment

One of the most overseen causes of headaches is spinal misalignment. America is so dominated by western medicine that the original practices of eastern medicine are frequently forgotten. Though chiropractic care is becoming increasingly popular, most people have yet to discover its seemingly mystical abilities. While chiropractic care is used for a wide variety of ailments, adjusting the vertebrae is one of its most common and useful practices. Many headaches, if they seem to have no other cause, originate from a misalignment of the back and neck. A simple misalignment causes the vertebrae to shift, so that the other muscles have to compensate, eventually causing a tension-like headache. Chiropractic care is a very quick way to alleviate headaches; often times only one session or several sessions are enough for preventative care.
