Pain is most often pounding and is usually targeted on just one side of the person’s head. The cause of migraine headaches is not known, but research scientists believe they are negatively influence by inflammation. This can come from stress, hormonal changes (especially during menstruation, ovulation or puberty), medications (including birth control pills), MSG, alcohol, caffeine or eating certain foods (such as chocolate). Migraine headaches are generally grouped as either classic or common. About 80% fall into the common migraine type category without an aura. These headaches are generally much less painful than the classic type with auras. What’s an aura? The aura that comes before or accompanies a migraine headache is usually bright flashing spots of light in your eyes or seeing spots or patterns of light moving around. Auras are sometimes accompanied by nausea and vomiting. Classic migraines and ocular migraines are often confused. But, although the experience of the aura can be similar, it occurs in only 1 eye. If the sufferer goes on to get a headache, it usually doesn’t hurt as much. These symptoms don’t usually last very long and they don’t do any harm to the eyes. Ocular migraines will definitely get in the way of reading or driving. Migraine sufferers may find temporary pain relief by lying down in a cool, quiet, dark place or by applying an ice pack or cold compresses to the pulsing area. The migraine will usually go away after a nap or a full nights sleep. After the headache has gone away, you should design a personal headache prevention program. By making some changes to your health and lifestyle, you can have a positive effect on your migraine headaches. Get started by reducing stress. This may be difficult in the beginning, but it’s definitely worth it. The next things you can do are to get yourself on an exercise program and start eating healthier. You should stay way from foods that have been known to trigger the onset of migraine headaches. These foods include caffeine, chocolate, refined sugar, carbonated drinks, alcohol, white flour and rice and any type of desserts. Since some of these foods are rather addictive, take yourself off them slowly to avoid any discomfort. Now that your goal of being migraine free is in sight, you’ll get a lot of enjoyment out of your new eating plan. Your diet should include vegetables, whole grains, fresh fruit, lean protein and pure water. And, to significantly reduce the swelling and eliminate pain and discomfort, include in your food plan a high quality omega 3 fish oil supplement. If you take the time to implement these simple lifestyle changes, you’re sure to see a difference in your health. May your future be free of migraine headaches!
